Clueless, Muffs, and Five Question Friday

Let's talk about one of my favorite movies.

Clueless will always have a special place in my heart.  It was my first "big girl" movie, VHS, of course.  Clueless was also the first movie soundtrack I owned.  I played that tape so much that the black tape came shooting out of the casing ..."as if!"

I can remember wondering when I was younger where on Earth I needed to go shopping to be given pretty bags like Cher is holding in the picture above.  Gap Kids would only give me plastic bags, what the heck!

Cher taught me my first bits of fashion advice ...and that every girl deserves a computerized inventory of her wardrobe.  I also watched almost every episode of the Clueless TV series.  I may or may not have accidentally taped over some home movie tapes in attempts to record Clueless for my future viewing pleasure. Oops.

Anyway, when Cher decided to create her own "muff" business on one episode, I was motivated to sew my own muffs.  Do y'all remember this episode?  Cher and her friends made the most extravagant muffs, embellished with sequins, rhinestones, fur, feathers, etc.  It became all the rage at Beverly Hills High.  The muffs even had pockets on the side to hold your lipstick, or you know, your feather pen.

You all know what muffs are, right?

Let's let good 'ol Wikipedia do the explaining:

A muff is a fashion accessory for outdoors usually made of a cylinder of fur or fabric with both ends open for keeping the hands warm. It was introduced to women's fashion in the 16th century and was popular with both men and women in the 17th and 18th centuries. By the early 20th century muffs were used in England only by women. It is also reported that the fashion largely fell out of style in the 19th century. It briefly returned in the late 1940's and 50's

I wish I had a picture of some of the muffs Cher made, but let me tell you, they were much more stylish than the ones you see above.

Here are some more recent muff photos.

Personally, I think these will come back into style. Maybe that's just me wishing.

Here are some muffs you can purchase via Etsy.

These two look a lot better than the muffs I tried to make back in the day with felt, cotton from my stuffed animals, and a single needle and thread!

Do y'all think muffs could become a new trend next winter?

This post is probably long enough, but I figured I'd answer the "Five Question Friday" questions that are going around in bloggy-land.
1. What is your current favorite book, and why?

Well, after my latest trip to the library, I can answer this question! I will just say that my current favorite is the one book I’ve read (or am reading) in a pretty long time, which is Confessions of a Shopaholic.  Bergdorf Blondes will always have a soft spot in my heart, though!

2. Do you go to the dentist regularly?

This reminds me that I need to make an appointment for a cleaning. I actually love going to the dentist.  It’s like taking my mouth to the spa …the equivalent of a facial for my teeth.   I love that dentist-clean feeling! Am I the only one who thinks this?

3. What is your worst memory from High School?

Well, I was actually in 8th grade, but I went to a small, private K-12 school,  so it was at the same school where I went to high school.

I was practicing cheerleading stunts with other classmates during gym class.  We had a football game later on that evening, so a few JV cheerleaders and I were getting a little extra practice for our upcoming halftime dance/stunts.

We were practicing a stunt, the “elevator,”  and the dismount, a “cradle toss.” (A very basic stunt, but we were weak little girls, so it was a challenge for us!)  Sorry, it is hard to explain in words to those of you who aren’t familiar with cheerleader terms.

I was in the base position, so another girl and I were holding up our friend in the air.  When it was time for the dismount, the flyer, or the girl that was in the air, came cradling down into our arms.  When she hit our arms, it caused an impact between my head and the other base’s head.

Long(er) story short: The other base’s teeth went through my chin.  I had a hole in my chin and she had her teeth dangling in her mouth.  Sorry if this sounds gross.

Later that day, after trips to two different hospitals, one tetanus shot, and 13 (internal and external) stitches later… I was alright.

4. What do you hope to be remembered for in your life?

Simply put, I hope to be remembered as a kind and loving person.  Someone who always put others before herself.  That’s the type of person my mom is, and the person I aspire to be.

5. Are you superstitious or do you have any superstitions?

I am not superstitious at all.  Thank goodness I’m not, because I recently broke a mirror!

Happy Weekend, everyone!
xo.

  5. I stumbled upon your blog, and when I saw Cher, I just had to comment!! LOVE HER! Clueless is by far my favourite movie ever. I swear, I can quote the entire thing... It's pretty ridiculous. LOL!

And muffs! Oh my. I used to be the biggest fan of American Girls (do you know them?) Anyway, I had Samantha, and she had a muff! And I loved it. I used to think how cool it would be to have the muff be my size, so I could wear it around. So, yes, in an ideal world, muffs would totally make a comeback.

By the way, love your blog, and you are gorgeous!! <3

  8. Thanks for the comment on my post :) Yes I love Conway. I completely saw the commercial for that. I am almost positive that episode is going to be about the Crystal Faye Todd murder. Did you ever hear about that? Her family and my family were distantly related down the line but were very close friends. It's still a shocking story and I plan on watching it too! Do you still live in nmb?
